From Tennis to Padel: A Natural Fit
Holly’s introduction to Padel was seamless. “As a former tennis player, I was drawn to Padel’s fast paced and strategic nature,” she says. The transition wasn’t without its challenges, though. “The walls changed everything,” she laughs. “I had to learn how to use them as an advantage rather than avoid them.”
The switch to doubles play was another adjustment. “The smaller court demands precision and teamwork, and that was a big shift for me,” she explains. However, the game’s social nature struck a chord. “Padel creates such a strong sense of community, and I love that. It’s competitive but also so much fun.”
Challenges and Growth
Early on, technique and strategy were Holly’s biggest hurdles. “I struggled with my shots, but after a few lessons with Dylan, things started clicking,” she admits. Strategy, however, took longer. “Playing games with Dylan has really helped me understand the tactical side of the sport. Every session, I learn something new.”
Dylan’s coaching style has been a game-changer. “He’s patient, motivating, and knows how to tailor his approach to my goals,” Holly says. “He took the time to break down techniques and make sure I understood how to apply them. That’s been huge for my development.”
Improvements and Breakthroughs
When asked about her most significant improvements, Holly lights up. “My precision and consistency have improved so much. Dylan helped me focus on technique and building muscle memory. Now, I can read the game better, anticipate moves, and make smarter decisions on the court.”
A standout moment came during a training session. “Dylan spotted an issue with my overheads and broke it down for me. Suddenly, everything clicked. I think he sometimes regrets teaching me new shots, though—I’ve won a few points against him,” she jokes.
Competing and Future Goals
Holly’s competitive spirit has already led to impressive milestones. “Winning a local league title in my first year was a highlight,” she says. “Adapting my tennis skills to padel and competing at a high level felt incredible.”
Looking ahead, Holly has clear goals. “I want to compete more, play against top players, and keep improving my mental and physical game. I’m also focusing on my glasswork, overheads, and communication with my double’s partners.”
The upcoming SA Padel Ball League is high on her priority list. “It’s such a great platform to test my skills and challenge myself against stronger opponents. I’m really looking forward to it.”
The Future of Padel in South Africa
Holly is excited about where Padel is heading. “The sport is growing fast here. More courts are popping up, and the community is getting bigger. It’s fun, accessible, and attracts people of all ages.”
So, how does she see more people getting involved? “Fun events like social nights or open challenges are a great way to introduce people to padel. Exhibition matches with top players would also inspire people to play and watch the sport.”
Advice for Beginners
Holly has simple but effective advice for anyone new to Padel: “Work with a good coach—someone like Dylan, who breaks things down and makes learning fun. Play as much as you can, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. The more you practice, the better you’ll get. Most importantly, enjoy it! Padel is about having fun, connecting with others, and loving the game.”
With her determination, natural talent, and strong guidance from Dylan, Holly Duddy is paving her way as one of South Africa’s most promising padel players.
