In the highly competitive arena of padel clubs, there are plenty of key figures essential to the success of any thriving facility. Managers, coaches, ambassadors, club operators—these are the roles we often hear about. But little is said about the ‘quiet constant’ that keeps the wheels turning day in and day out: the Marshall.
At first glance, the role might seem low-skill—fetching balls and assisting here and there. But how wrong we are. Today, That Padel Guy is joined by Sam Mdlhano—affectionately known as Sammy—the Head Marshall of Thrashers Padel Club in Menlyn, Pretoria. Sam gives us an exclusive peek into how he manages his team, maintains the five-court facility, and ensures that every person who walks through Thrashers’ doors has an unforgettable experience.
Meet Sam: The Marshall with Soul, Skill, and Success
Marshalls: The Real Deal or Just Another Job?
That Padel Guy:
Hey bud, thanks for sitting down with me today. I know the club is probably in panic mode without you right now—haha. But seriously, major respect for what you guys do. If the Thrashers community were sitting here with us, how would they describe you?
Sam:
Hey bro! What a pleasure to be here with That Padel Guy, haha—I’m honoured!
Most people know me as the nice, fun, and down-to-earth giant. I’m that guy you meet on your first visit to Thrashers, and the same guy who might eventually join your matches or even show up to your family americanos.
Getting into the Game
That Padel Guy:
How did you get into marshalling? What personal traits help you excel in your role?
Sam:
I’ve always been into sports—cricket during school and club cricket after. I love tennis too, and people like Serena Williams have been a big inspiration. Padel just felt like the natural next step. My personality? I’d say being approachable, responsible, and a lover of people really helps in this job.
The Highs and Lows
That Padel Guy:
What are the most satisfying and most difficult parts of your job?
Sam:
As Head Marshall, I make a lot of decisions on behalf of both my team and the club. Being able to lead, assess, and adjust as situations change is key. Owning and running a construction company has also helped me understand the value of customer service—ultimately, I’m here to serve.
The most satisfying part? When returning customers tell me that I’m the reason they love the club. That right there makes every moment worth it.
A Day in the Life of a Marshall
That Padel Guy:
Give us a quick list—what are your day-to-day responsibilities?
Sam:
A Marshall is the most versatile role in any club. Here’s just a few of the things I do:
- Provide services to customers as needed.
- Monitor clients during play.
- Maintain a professional, energetic presence.
- Retrieve balls hit out of court.
- Manage court bookings and assignments.
- Organise and run tournaments.
- Constantly check that all areas are safe and clients are having fun.
- Ensure cleanliness and court upkeep.
- Set team shifts weekly.
- Greet clients on arrival and departure.
- Orientate and guide new players.
The Heartbeat of the Club
That Padel Guy:
You’re often the first and last person clients interact with. How do you stay passionate and pass that energy on?
Sam:
Seeing happy clients brings me joy. Watching them grow on their padel journey and being part of that growth—it drives me every day.
Above and Beyond
That Padel Guy:
Being a great Marshall is more than just ticking boxes. Share some standout moments with us?
Sam:
Every week brings something new. A few moments stand out:
- When clients get injured—bleeding, twisted ankles, whatever—I’m the first responder. I grab the first aid kit and ensure they’re okay.
- When someone has car trouble—flat tires or dead batteries—I step in. I’ve changed tires, jump-started cars, whatever it takes to help them get home safely.
More Than a Job Title
That Padel Guy:
What makes the Marshall role so unique—why can’t anyone else do what you do?
Sam:
As Head Marshall, I’m the face of the club. My energy and behaviour define the customer experience. My leadership and problem-solving skills, sharpened from running my own company, are things I bring into this role every day.
The Marshall Who Matters
That Padel Guy:
You’re clearly a key part of the Thrashers magic. What kind of experience can new clients expect when they visit?
Sam:
Thrashers is the most friendly and welcoming place I’ve ever worked. A simple visit could lead to meeting the entire team—Coach Nico, our marketing ladies, and others who are always around and ready to help.
We go the extra mile—sometimes even giving away so many free t-shirts we probably shouldn’t talk about it, haha. Plus, you’ll often catch high-level padel being played, and the ambassadors are always keen to share tips.
Words of Wisdom
That Padel Guy:
What advice would you give to Marshalls across the country who think it’s “just a job”?
Sam:
If you don’t take it seriously, it won’t take you seriously.
If you don’t appreciate the role, it won’t appreciate you.
Stay humble always—that’ll take you far. Being a Marshall is crucial to providing a safe, efficient, and enjoyable experience for every client.
In Closing…
Sammy isn’t just a Marshall—he’s the heartbeat of Thrashers. And for every club wondering what makes the magic happen, look no further than the people like him, holding it all together with pride, passion, and purpose.
